In their own words.
My love for music started when I was just seven years old. My mom used to do fashion shows, and I’d be the kid breakdancing in between sets — music has always been in my bones. A few years later, I picked up the trumpet after spending hours watching my uncle play. I was hooked.
At one point, my trumpet instructor told me I wasn’t doing well — but instead of giving up, I switched to the baritone and dedicated my entire summer to practicing. That hard work paid off when I made All-Region, earned first chair, and even received a scholarship.
I went on to study at the University of Arkansas, and it was there that I discovered music production while taking a MIDI Studio Technology class. Everything clicked. After college, I moved to California to chase that dream and started working with producers who were connected to major artists like Dr. Dre and Ammad.
It wasn’t always easy — I had moments where people didn’t believe in me, even throwing my beats away. But one day, Ahmad came across one of my tracks, and he loved it. That moment changed everything. Soon after, I had the incredible opportunity to tour with the legendary Aretha Franklin for several years.
Eventually, I moved back home to Texas to settle down and raise my kids. Now, I’m excited to share my passion for music production and beat-making with students here at Matt Burk Music Studio — helping others find their sound, their confidence, and their voice through music.
